Beaujolais

About this region

Just south of Burgundy, Beaujolais is France's home of Gamay, grown on granitic soils that give the variety its most refined expression. The region is best known to many for Beaujolais Nouveau, the early-November release of the year's first wine, but the serious story lives in the ten cru appellations — Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Brouilly and others — which can produce ageworthy, almost Burgundian wines from old vines. The natural-wine movement of the 1980s, led by Jules Chauvet's disciples, restored Beaujolais to fine-wine credibility.
