Founded in 1834 and one of Portugal's oldest continuously-operating wineries, José Maria da Fonseca is the historic heart of Azeitão wine tourism on the Setúbal Peninsula. The visit takes in the 19th-century Casa Museu — preserved as the family lived in it — the original wood-aged Moscatel cellars where bottles from the 1880s still sleep, and the modern bottling lines. Tastings can include legendary old Moscatel de Setúbal vintages from the family's reserva archive. A genuine pilgrimage for anyone serious about Portuguese fortified wine.
