It is said that Madeira wine’s principal mentor was Prince D. Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, and this proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported along routes that included Europe, where it was considered the most refined, to the point of even being used as perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are not uncommon in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The year of bottling may not correspond to the image presented.
