The history of Madeira wine begins shortly after the island from which it takes its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports 25 years after its discovery. On the island of Madeira, vines are cultivated in small plots of earth known as “poios,” supported by earth walls on the mountain slopes, which are often difficult to access. The unique soil and climate of Madeira, along with the production process and the grape varieties grown, have contributed to the unrivalled distinction of Madeira wine over the ages. In addition to these factors, 30 grape varieties are highlighted for producing this fortified wine, the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia. Bottles of old wines may show traces of dust and damaged labels, as expected for their age. The National Cellar is committed to storing all wines at the correct temperature and humidity, but always opts to preserve the visual appearance inherent to their age. We select brands/regions that, by default, reveal distinct characteristics in tastings of aged spirits. However, we inform that beverages exposed to time, and even within a bottle, aromas are subject to different evolutions. Thus, the National Cellar cannot be held responsible for the product’s quality, as it concerns an aged spirit. The bottling year may not correspond to the image presented. (Illustrative image)
