It is said that Madeira wine’s chief mentor was Prince Henry, who encouraged the cultivation of the Candida Malvasia grape—originating from Candia, Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with trade routes that included Europe, where it was regarded as a refined delicacy and even used as perfume for the court ladies’ handkerchiefs.
