It is said that Madeira wine’s chief mentor was Infante Dom Henrique, who encouraged the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originally from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported along routes that included Europe, where it was regarded as the epitome of refinement and even used as perfume for the court ladies’ veils. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it abound in history, the arts, and the legends of several nations. The year of bottling may not match the image shown.
