Legend has it that Prince Henry was the principal mentor of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia, Crete—on the island of Madeira, an initiative that proved to be a success. By the mid‑15th century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with routes reaching Europe where it was regarded as the most refined of its kind, even used as a perfume for the court ladies’ scarves. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it are common in history, the arts, and the legends of several nations. The year of bottling may not correspond to the image shown.
