Description

The history of Madeira wine began shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports appearing 25 years later. On Madeira, vines are cultivated in small earth plots known as “poios,” held up by earth walls on the often inaccessible mountain slopes. The island’s unique soil and climate, combined with its production process and the varieties grown, have helped Madeira wine attain an unrivaled distinction over the years. In addition, 30 grape varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, with the most noble being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho, and Malvasia.
