William Warre first appears linked to the Port wine trade with the founding in 1729 of Messrs. Clark, Thorn & Warre, building on a long tradition of families involved in Port production since 1670. The young Warre, who had served as a soldier under the Duke of Wellington during the wars against the Napoleonic invasions on the Peninsula, played a decisive role in the brand’s recognition and growth. By the late 18th century, Warre & Sons already accounted for 10 % of all Port exports in 1791. The bottling year may not match the image shown. (Illustrative image only)
