The Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A. was founded in January 1996, based on a stock of wines that Fernando Luiz Van Zeller had acquired and then transferred to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. Its corporate name revives a noble title granted by Queen Maria II of Portugal to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron of Vilar, in 1836, a title that remains in the family by descent. Before the establishment of Barão de Vilar, the Van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most renowned estates in the Port‑wine sector, from which the legendary “Vintage 1931 Nacional” comes. That wine is regarded by Wine Spectator as one of the two best world wines of the 20th century. Today, Barão de Vilar is known as Van Zeller Wine Collection, a company that represents a treasury of values, ideas, stories, and wines.
