It is said that Infante Dom Henrique was the chief mentor of Madeira wine, encouraging the cultivation of the Malvasia Cândida grape—originating from Candia in Crete—on the island of Madeira, a venture that proved successful. By the mid‑fifteenth century, Madeira wine was already being exported, with trade routes reaching Europe, where it was regarded as the most refined. It was even used as a perfume for the ladies’ handkerchiefs at court. The prestige of this nectar was such that references to it appear frequently in history, the arts, and the legends of various nations. The bottling year may not correspond to the image shown.
