William Warre’s name first emerged in association with the Port wine trade when Messrs Clark, Thorn & Warre were founded in 1729, benefiting from a long family tradition of Port wine production dating back to 1670. The young Warre, who had served as a soldier under the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular War against the Napoleonic invasions, played a decisive role in the brand’s recognition and growth. By the late 18th century, Warre & Sons already accounted for 10 % of all Port wine exports in 1791. The bottling year may not match the image shown (illustrative only).
