The company was founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista, who managed the business until 1973. To this day, the administration of Caves Messias remains in the hands of the Messias family descendants. Since its founding, Messias has produced and marketed wines from the main demarcated regions: Dão, Bairrada, Douro, Vinho Verde, Beiras, and Port Wine. The company is also renowned for the high quality of its Natural Sparkling wines and Aguardentes (grape spirits). The MESSIAS headquarters is located in Mealhada, a small town in the Bairrada region, where the company owns 160 hectares of vineyards, 70 of which are dedicated to the production of the prestigious wines of Quinta do Valdoeiro. In Ferradosa, in the Douro Valley, it owns 200 hectares, 130 of which are planted with vines, for the production of Port Wine and the Douro wine Quinta do Cachão.
