The history of Madeira wine began shortly after the island that gives it its name was discovered, with records of the first productions and exports dating back 25 years. On Madeira, vines are cultivated in small earth plots called “poios,” supported by stone walls on the slopes of the mountains, which are often difficult to reach. The island’s unique soil and climate, together with the production process and the grape varieties grown, have helped make Madeira wine unrivaled over time. In addition to these factors, 30 varieties are used to produce this fortified wine, the most prestigious being Sercial, Boal, Verdelho and Malvasia.
