Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A. was established in January 1996, based on a stock of wines acquired by Fernando Luiz Van Zeller, which he passed on to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. The company's name revives a noble title granted by Queen Maria II of Portugal to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron of Vilar, in 1836, and which, by descent, remains directly held by the family. Before the founding of Barão de Vilar, the Van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most renowned estates in the Port wine sector, and the source of the legendary "Vintage 1931 Nacional," considered by Wine Spectator to be one of the two greatest wines of the 20th century. Today, Barão de Vilar is known as Van Zeller Wine Collection, a company that represents a collection of values, ideas, stories, and wines.
