The name William Warre first appears in connection with the Port wine trade, with the founding in 1729 of Messrs. Clark, Thorn & Warre. The company drew on a long family tradition linked to Port wine production dating back to 1670. The young Warre, who had served as a soldier under the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsular war against the Napoleonic invasions, was destined to play a decisive role, using his connections to help the brand gain recognition and grow. By the end of the 18th century, Warre & Sons already accounted for 10 % of all Port wine exports in 1791. The bottling year may not match the image shown. (illustrative picture only)
