Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A. was established in January 1996 from a stock of wines acquired by Fernando Luiz Van Zeller and passed on to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. The company’s name references a noble title granted by Queen Maria II of Portugal to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the first Barão de Vilar, in 1836—an honor that remains in direct possession of the family through descent. Before the founding of Barão de Vilar, the Van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most prestigious estates in the Port wine sector, from which the legendary “Vintage 1931 Nacional” originates. That wine is regarded by *Wine Spectator* as one of the two best wines of the 20th century. Today, Barão de Vilar operates under the name Van Zeller Wine Collection, a company that represents a collection of values, ideas, stories, and wines.
