Porto Tawny wine of quality that pays tribute to the 200 years since Brazil’s independence was conceived by King D. Pedro. Until around 1756, the production of “shipping wines,” as the Port wines were then called, followed the so‑called “old process” of vinification. Fortification, always in small volumes, was only carried out after fermentation had finished, thus producing dry wines. In 1820 the modern fortification process emerged, in which the alcoholic fermentation was deliberately stopped, resulting in sweet wines. This production method only became widespread in 1852, at which point the Port wines began to resemble those of today. Thus, Porto wine is a fortified wine produced in the Douro Demarcated Region under peculiar conditions derived from natural and human factors. The production process, rooted in tradition, includes stopping the fermentation of the must by adding grape spirit, bottling the wines, and subsequently aging them. Port wines are divided into different categories according to the type of aging, ranging among the Ruby, Tawny, White and Rosé styles. The bottling year may not correspond to the image presented.
