Barão de Vilar, Vinhos S.A. was founded in January 1996 from a collection of wines acquired by Fernando Luiz Van Zeller and subsequently passed on to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. The company’s name echoes a noble title granted by Queen Maria II of Portugal to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the 1st Baron of Vilar, in 1836—a title that, through descent, remains in the family’s direct possession. Prior to the creation of Barão de Vilar, the Van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most respected estates in the Port wine sector. It was here that the legendary “Vintage 1931 Nacional” was produced, a wine that Wine Spectator ranked among the two best in the world of the 20th century. Today the brand is known as Van Zeller Wine Collection, a company that embodies a legacy of values, ideas, stories, and wines.
