Carcavelos, a region demarcated in 1908, lies very close to the mouth of the Tagus in the parishes of São Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais, and part of the parish of Oeiras in the municipality of the same name. The fame of Carcavelos wines has faded over time. The Marquess of Pombal, who produced them at his estate in Oeiras, appreciated them so much that D. José I presented them to the court of Beijing in 1752. Wine production was for centuries the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos. Its enduring name, quality, and typicity were recognized by a law decree in 1908. (image merely illustrative)
