Carcavelos, a demarcated wine region since 1908, lies very close to the mouth of the Tagus River, in the parishes of São Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais, and part of the parish of Oeiras in the municipality of the same name. The reputation of Carcavelos wines stretches back through time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them at his estate in Oeiras, appreciated them so highly that King José I presented them to the court in Peking in 1752. For centuries, wine production was the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos. Its traditional name, quality, and typicity were recognized by Letter of Law in 1908. *(image for illustrative purposes only)*
