In the early 19th century, Thomas Reynolds moved to the Alentejo region with the aim of entering the cork business. Three generations later, his grandson John Reynolds acquired the Mouchão estate to produce wine. The first vines were planted in 1901, and in 1929 construction began on a traditional cellar and a distillery that still produces Mouchão Brandy today. Today the estate remains managed and worked by descendants of the original family, and the entire winemaking process is virtually unchanged, preserving hand‑harvest and grape fermentation in stone troughs with foot‑treading. These traditional techniques and the estate’s long‑standing success make Mouchão so reminiscent of how wines once were. (illustrative image only)
