Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (its first record dates from 1616), sits on the banks of the Douro River near the town of Régua, in the heart of the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the Douro. At the estate's quay, the Rabelo boats would moor to load the casks filled with Port wine and carry them down to Gaia, at the river's mouth, where they were sold in bulk to the whole world, leaving their origin behind, since these wooden casks were not even marked with the producer's seal. At their destination, the wine was bottled and labeled with the brands of the foreign merchants who purchased it, some of which came to gain considerable prestige.
