With a history that stretches back to the early 18th century, the main house was built in 1720 and, surprisingly, survived the 1755 earthquake thanks to the granite foundations of the Serra de Sintra. Wine production stopped in 1903, but a century later the “most westerly vineyards in Europe” were replanted and the cellar modernised. The wines of Casal Sta. Maria are a product of nature’s expression and the unique terroir that envelops the vines, which lie along the coastal edge of Serra de Sintra. (illustrative image)
