Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on distributing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition on producing Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it shifted to marketing table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s it launched one of Bairrada’s most celebrated wine brands, “Frei João,” and a little later introduced the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region.
