Porto Tawny wine of quality, celebrating the 400 years of existence of the Portuguese Navy Marines. Up until around 1756, the “shipping wines”—what Port wines were then called—followed the so‑called “old process” of winemaking. Distillation, always in small volumes, took place only after fermentation was finished, producing dry wines. In 1820 the modern distillation process was introduced, stopping the alcoholic fermentation and yielding sweet wines. This method only became widespread in 1852, when Port wines began to resemble the ones we know today. Thus, Port is a fortified wine produced in the Douro Demarcated Region under unique natural and human conditions. The production process, rooted in tradition, involves stopping the must’s fermentation with grape spirit, bottling the wines, and then aging them. Port wines are categorized by ageing style, ranging from Ruby, Tawny, White, to Rosé. The bottling year may not match the image shown (illustrative only).
