Port Wine Special Reserve – a quality wine celebrating 650 years of the Windsor Treaty. Until about 1756, the “shipping wines” – then called Port Wines – followed the so‑called “old process” of winemaking, where fortification, always in small volumes, was applied only after fermentation finished, yielding dry wines. In 1820, the modern fortification process emerged, stopping alcoholic fermentation to produce sweet wines. This method only became widespread in 1852, when Port Wines began to resemble the present day. Thus, Port Wine is a fortified wine produced in the Douro Demarcated Region, under peculiar conditions shaped by natural and human factors. The traditional production process includes halting must fermentation by adding wine brandy, concentrating the wines, and then ageing. Port Wines are divided into categories based on ageing style, ranging from Ruby, Tawny, White to Rosé. The bottling year may not match the image shown. (Illustrative image only.)
