Port Wine Tawny of quality that honours the 700 years of existence of the Portuguese Navy in service of Portugal. Until around 1756, the production of “shipping wines”, as the Port wines were then called, followed the so‑called “old process” of winemaking. Brandying, always in small volumes, took place only after fermentation had finished, yielding dry wines. In 1820, the modern brandying process emerged, whereby fermentation was stopped, resulting in sweet wines. This production method only became widespread in 1852, at which point Port wines began to resemble the present day. Thus, Port Wine is a fortified wine produced in the Demarcated Region of the Douro under peculiar conditions derived from natural and human factors. The production process, rooted in tradition, includes halting the must’s fermentation by adding wine brandy, batching the wines, and subsequent ageing. Port wines are divided into different categories according to the type of ageing, ranging between Ruby, Tawny, White and Rosé styles. The bottling year may not correspond to the image presented.
