Porto Tawny Reserve – a quality wine that celebrates the 700 years of the Portuguese Navy serving Portugal. Until about 1756, the “shipment wines” – then called Porto wines – followed the so‑called “old process” of vinification. Distillation, always in small volumes, came only after fermentation was finished, producing dry wines. In 1820 the modern spirit‑adding process emerged, halting alcoholic fermentation to create sweet wines. This method only became widespread in 1852, when the modern styles of Porto began to take shape. Thus, a Porto wine is a fortified wine produced in the Demarcated Region of the Douro under conditions shaped by natural and human factors. The production process, rooted in tradition, involves stopping the must’s fermentation by adding grape spirit, then bottling the wine and aging it thereafter. Porto wines are divided into different categories according to their ageing style, ranging from Ruby, Tawny, White and Rosé. The bottling year may not correspond to the image presented.
