The wines of Colares are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. Let’s start with the vineyard, which is fully planted on “impressive” 15 hectares, already hinting at the dynamics of this tiny region. There is also the uncommon fact that these vineyards were never affected by the phylloxera scourge at the end of the 19th century, thanks to their sandy soils. Yet Colares, despite these paradoxes, is a region in its own right that hosts genuine wines full of character. They were among the most renowned and sought-after wines of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Today we can still find these wines from those times, in enviable condition, giving them unparalleled longevity that can only be achieved by great wines. The main grape varieties are Ramisco for reds and Malvasia de Colares for whites. Both varieties, thanks to the exceptional maritime influence, give these wines a unique singularity and character that deserve to be known. (illustrative image only)
