Description

The wines of Colares are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. Let us start with the vineyard, which is fully planted across “impressive” 15 hectares, a fact that alone hints at the dynamism of this tiny region. It also bears the uncommon peculiarity that these vines were never hit by the phylloxera scourge at the end of the 19th century, thanks to their planting on sandy soils. Yet Colares, amid these paradoxes, is a region in its own right, producing genuine wines brimming with character. They were among the most acclaimed and sought after wines of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. Even today we can find those wines from those times in remarkable condition, granting them unmatched longevity that only great wines can achieve. The main varieties are Ramisco for reds and Malvasía de Colares for whites. Both grapes, shaped by the exceptional maritime influence, bestow a unique singularity and character on these wines, which deserve to be known.
