It was in 1927 that 11 members, led by Domingos Silva and Ângelo Neves, founded Aliança in Sangalhos (Anadia), and the company now boasts over 80 years of history. It began exporting immediately to Brazil, Africa and Europe, and today more than 50 % of its production is earmarked for export—primarily wines, sparkling wines and aguardente—making Aliança a familiar brand in Portugal and in about 60 countries. In 2007 Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal acquired a majority stake in Aliança, bringing it under the Bacalhôa Group and changing the corporate name from Caves Aliança S.A. to Aliança Vinhos de Portugal S.A., accompanied by a new institutional image. Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, one of the country’s largest and most innovative wine firms, has built a solid reputation and loyal following among domestic and international consumers. With operations in seven Portuguese wine regions, a total of 1,200 ha of vineyards, 40 estates, 40 grape varieties and four wine centres (cellars), the company stands out for its size and 70 % autonomy in its own production.
