It was in 1927 that eleven partners, led by Domingos Silva and Ângelo Neves, decided to found Aliança in Sangalhos (Anadia), a company that now boasts over 80 years of existence. It immediately began exporting to Brazil, Africa, and Europe, and today more than 50 % of its output is earmarked for export—primarily wines, sparkling wines, and aguardente—an image that represents Aliança in Portugal and in roughly 60 countries worldwide. In 2007 Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal acquired a majority stake in Aliança, bringing it under the Bacalhôa Group; the corporate name of Caves Aliança S.A was changed to Aliança Vinhos de Portugal S.A., at which point the brand identity was also updated. Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, one of the largest and most innovative wine companies in Portugal, has over the years developed a wide range of wines that have earned it a solid reputation and the loyalty of both domestic and international consumers. Present in seven Portuguese wine regions, it manages 1,200 ha of vineyards, 40 estates, 40 different grape varieties, and four production centres (wineries), distinguishing itself in the market by its size and by 70 % self‑sufficiency in production.
