Founded in 1927 by eleven partners led by Domingos Silva and Ângelo Neves, the Aliança estate in Sangalhos (Anadia) is now over 80 years old. It began exporting immediately to Brazil, Africa and Europe, and today more than half of its output—wines, sparkling wines and brandy—goes abroad, representing the Aliança brand in Portugal and in roughly 60 countries. In 2007 Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal acquired the majority stake, bringing Aliança into the Bacalhôa Group and renaming it Aliança Vinhos de Portugal S.A., with a new corporate image. Bacalhôa, one of Portugal’s largest and most innovative wine companies, has built a solid reputation and a loyal following among domestic and international consumers. With vineyards covering 1,200 ha across seven Portuguese wine regions, 40 estates, 40 grape varieties and four wine centres, the company stands out for its size and its 70 % autonomy in production.
