It was in 1927 that 11 members, led by Domingos Silva and Ângelo Neves, decided to found Aliança in Sangalhos (Anadia), a company that now boasts over 80 years of history. From the outset it exported immediately to Brazil, Africa and Europe, and today more than 50 % of its production is earmarked for export, chiefly wines, sparkling wines and aguardente, giving Aliança a strong brand presence in Portugal and in roughly 60 countries worldwide. In 2007 Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal acquired the majority stake in Aliança, bringing it into the Bacalhôa Group and changing the legal name of Caves Aliança S.A. to Aliança Vinhos de Portugal S.A., accompanied by a redesign of its institutional image. Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, one of the country’s largest and most innovative wine companies, has over the years built a broad portfolio that has earned it a solid reputation and the loyalty of both domestic and international consumers. With vineyards spread across seven Portuguese wine regions—totaling 1,200 ha, 40 estates, 40 grape varieties and four wine centres (cellars)—the company distinguishes itself by its size and by achieving 70 % autonomy in its own production.
