In 1889 the family earned its first Bronze medal and an entry in the Golden Book at the Paris International Exposition, thanks to the quality of its wines and olive oils. Later, with the advent of the Republic in the early 20th century, the Almeida Garrett family emigrated to France, and when they returned they planted the first Chardonnay vines—a flagship variety of the family house. Since then, they have diversified their agricultural products, but wine has remained the main focus and the largest share of the family's dedication. Today Almeida Garrett Wines is one of the most emblematic references in Beira Interior, the oldest producer in the region, with a vineyard area of about 44 hectares, and already involves the work of the 4th and 5th generations.
