This Anselmo Mendes is a delightfully rebellious wine – clearly a man (or woman!) who doesn’t rush things. The grapes are harvested by hand, and this deliberate, frantic approach seems to lend a remarkable intensity. The maceration is remarkably short, almost a respectful nod to the Vinhão grape, while the extended cold stabilisation (48-72 hours) speaks to a desire to retain that beautiful fruit expression. The result is a deeply vibrant violet wine, brimming with aromas of wild herbs and forest floor, underpinned by ripe plum and cherry. It’s wonderfully refreshing on the palate, perfectly balanced by smooth, integrated tannins – ideal with a grilled white fish or a seafood rice dish.
