The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first recorded in 1616), sits on the banks of the Douro River near the town of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. At the estate’s quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load barrels of port wine and carry them to Gaia at the river’s mouth, where they were sold wholesale worldwide, stripping them of their hidden identity since the wooden barrels bore no producer’s seal. In the destination, the wine was bottled and labeled with the brand of the foreign merchants who bought it, some of whom later gained considerable prestige.
