Description

The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first recorded in 1616), sits on the banks of the Douro River beside the town of Régua, in the heart of the world's oldest demarcated wine region. At the estate’s quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load barrels of Port wine and carry them to Gaia at the river mouth, where they were sold wholesale. The wine was then bottled and labeled with the branding of the foreign merchants who bought it, some of whom went on to gain considerable prestige. (Illustrative image only)
