Bacalhôa Wines of Portugal, founded in 1922 under the name João Pires & Filhos, has charted a long journey, establishing itself as one of the country’s most innovative wine producers. The company began by making wines from grapes grown in the Palmela region. In the 1980s, Bacalhôa Wines expanded, acquiring vineyards across Portugal and setting new standards for quality wine production. The Quinta da Bacalhôa, considered the finest estate from the first half of the 15th century still standing in Portugal, is an ancient property of the Portuguese Royal House. Located in Azeitão, the estate and the renowned Bacalhôa Palace form an artistic monument of great national significance. Today, the Quinta belongs to the Berardo Foundation, part of the family bearing the same name, whose patriarch is Commander José Berardo. It was declared a National Monument on June 23, 1910. In the surrounding area, visitors find picturesque villages, cellars, and one of Portugal’s most beautiful and imposing landscapes – the Arrábida Natural Park. (Illustrative image)
