Barão de Vilar – Vinhos, S.A. was founded in January 1996 from a stock of wines purchased by Fernando Luiz van Zeller, which he then passed on to his two sons, Fernando and Álvaro. Its corporate name revives a noble title that Queen Maria II of Portugal granted in 1836 to Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, the first Baron of Vilar; that title has been inherited and remains in the family’s direct possession. Before the creation of Barão de Vilar, the van Zeller family owned Quinta do Noval, one of the most renowned estates in the Port wine sector, from which the legendary “Vintage 1931 Nacional” originates—considered by Wine Spectator to be one of the two best wines of the twentieth century.
