This Belondrade Quinta Apolonia is a passionate ode to Verdejo, a vibrant expression of the estate – and, of course, the delightful Apolline. Despite a damp autumn causing some initial concern (and a rather dramatic hailstorm in the summer demanding meticulous selection), the harvest was brought forward to August 24th, expertly preserving the acidity the producer so clearly values. The result is a remarkably complex wine, with the freshness of the freshly-fermented grapes beautifully interwoven with the structure and depth of the aged parcels matured in oak. A 93/100 medal from the DWA and a 92 score from Guía Peñín confirm this is a wine deserving of a thoughtful pairing – perhaps with a classic bacalhau com amêndoas.
