In the early 19th century a new chapter of Portuguese wine opened with the launch of a wine that would become an icon, coveted yet deliberately kept out of the spotlight. Its creator, Alexandre de Almeida, blended luxury hospitality with a private cellar and proprietary wine, giving rise to the rare, historic Buçaco wines produced in the beautiful Palácio do Bussaco, in the hills north of Coimbra. These wines eschew modern trends and boast a tremendous aging potential, capable of maturing for decades in the bottle.
