Carcavelos, a region demarcated in 1908, lies very close to the mouth of the Tagus in the parishes of São Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais, as well as part of the parish of Oeiras in the same municipality. The fame of Carcavelos wines has faded over time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them at his estate in Oeiras, appreciated them so much that D. José I presented them to the court of Beijing in 1752. Wine production was for centuries the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos, and its lasting name, quality and typicity were officially recognized by a Charter of Law in 1908.
