Carcavelos, a region demarcated in 1908, lies very close to the mouth of the Tagus, spanning the parishes of São Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais, as well as part of the parish of Oeiras in the same municipality. The fame of Carcavelos wines faded over time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them on his Oeiras estate, admired them so much that King José I gifted them to the court of Peking in 1752. Wine production had been the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos for centuries. Its enduring name, quality and typicity were formally recognized by the Carta de Lei in 1908.
