The Carcavelos region, demarcated in 1908, lies just outside the mouth of the Tagus River in the parishes of São Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos within the municipality of Cascais, and also partly in the parish of Oeiras in the eponymous municipality. The renown of Carcavelos wines has faded over time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them on his estate in Oeiras, prized them so highly that King José I gifted the wines to the court of Beijing in 1752. For centuries, wine production was the most important economic activity in the parish of Carcavelos. Its enduring name, quality, and typicity were formally recognized by a law decree in 1908.
