Carcavelos, a region demarcated in 1908, is located very close to the mouth of the Tagus River, spanning the parishes of São Domingos de Rana and Carcavelos in the municipality of Cascais, as well as part of the parish of Oeiras in the eponymous municipality. The fame of Carcavelos wines has faded over time. The Marquis of Pombal, who produced them at his estate in Oeiras, admired them so much that King José I gifted them to the court of Beijing in 1752. For centuries, wine production was the most important economic activity in the Carcavelos parish. Its enduring name, quality, and typicity were formally recognized by a charter law in 1908.
