This Carmelo Maria de Lourdes from the Douro appears to have been handled with almost excessive care – a remarkably gentle destemming, followed by cold-maceration that makes you wonder if the grapes took a little nap before fermentation. The result is an incredibly fresh and elegant wine, with wild berry notes shining through, and a subtle hint of wood that thankfully doesn’t dominate. Fine, silk-like tannins and a persistent finish are, without a doubt, a delight. Perfect with a grilled fish or roasted duck to balance the intensity.
