This Casa Amarela Grande Reserva, hailing from the Douro, is a decidedly bold choice. The fermentation in new 500-litre French oak barrels clearly indicates a pursuit of complexity, almost a challenge to persuade the Rabigato and Malvasia Fina to mature with a touch more refinement. Those eight months of barrel aging promise an expression that won’t be delicate, yet hopefully will unveil nuances of spices and dried fruit – perfect alongside a good Portu Gin and a pastel de nata to tame the palate.
