Founded in 1920 by Deonilde Freitas, the estate was later run by Germana Freitas and then by Ermelinda Freitas, all of whom devoted special attention to the wine. From its earliest days the house has focused on the quality of its vineyards and wines, which were originally produced and sold in bulk without a proprietary label. It was under the current management that a major shift occurred—creating its own brands—and in 1997 a new cycle began with the first wine produced and bottled by Casa Ermelinda Freitas.
